Teacher Week: 5 Fun Facts About Me!

Okay seriously, don't even ask my how or why I am blogging right now when tomorrow is the first day of school!  I just feel so behind in the blog world... so much so that I have a list of blog posts to write!  The beginning of the year is always so stressful for me!  So that's my first fact....

I am scared of the first week of school!  No lie.  Seriously.  I get so stressed out because I feel like I don't know how to plan because I don't know my kiddos yet!  The year I over planned, I started with 36 wild crazy kiddos (26 boys) and could not get a single thing done!  So the following year, I kept that in mind and planned to take things more slowly and ended up with 20 students who were fairly quiet!  So anyway, I have tomorrow moderately planned out (since I have 28 kids on my roster right now) and I will plan for the rest of the week after the 1st day!

I have a now 13 year old daughter (going into 8th grade tomorrow!) and we are expecting a boy in January!

I am super nervous for maternity leave because I am a CONTROL FREAK in my classroom (I seriously hate being out for even a day)!  But stay tuned because I will be creating Whole Brain Teaching sub plans for long & short term subs!

Okay def not a secret but I am OBSESSED with WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING!  I cannot wait to start this school year and learn and implement more amazing tools from Coach B!

Last year (before I ever dreamt my firsties would be multiplying), the local newspaper did a story on my class and WBT...

This summer at the conference I got my very own badge as a WBT Intern...

I had been working all year to get an exemplary video for certification & got my 1st Graders to not only know multiplication, but they could use it, explain it, and teach it!

You can see a video clip of this HERE!

It didn't make the cut BUT, I did get the best honor & surprise by being asked to come on board as a WBT Staff Member!  There are only 14 WBT Certified Teachers in the world and from what I know, Coach only asked 5 people to come on board as WBT Staff!  That means, I am 1 of less than 20 people in the world chosen to work for Coach and represent Whole Brain Teaching!  I even got my own WBT email address!

I love sharing WBT strategies so if you are looking for WBT information, be sure to check my labels on the right side bar and click on Whole Brain Teaching or WBT!

I teach Zumba Fitness!  I have been a certified instructor since 2010!  Zumba helped me overcome some rough times and still to this day, it serves as my therapy!  Although it is getting harder and harder to jump around with a baby belly, I am going to try to teach as late into my pregnancy as I can!

My daughter even used to teach with me & choreograph her own songs!

I'm getting a NEW BLOG!  I love everyone's cute blogs and decided it was finally time to upgrade!  I had been sharing a blog with another teacher, however, she ran into health problems this past year and was not able to blog much.  I kind of took over with all my WBT stuff, so we talked this summer and decided to go our separate blog ways!

Her new blog is coming soon but for now, you can follow Samantha on Instagram at The Primary Beacon!

This is a sneak peak of my new layout!  I cannot wait!

And actually, it is Susan Jones' (from Blog Hoppin' and Thank God It's First) husband who is doing my design!  It is different but cute and matches my classroom theme!

Here is a sneak peak...

Stay tuned for the blog reveal and giveaway coming soon!

Be sure to tune in all week for #teacherweek15!  I will try to keep up since this is our first week of school!  Wednesday is classroom reveal day so since I have not done that yet, I will for SURE get that one in!

Have a GREAT week!

Whole Brain Teaching Resources

Hey guys!  So, this is a late random Friday night post but I ran into a dilemma today!

Okay, so I LOVE to share all the Whole Brain Teaching things that I make.  I have been making them, sharing them, pinning them, etc for almost 2 years!  Recently, Coach B decided it would be best for the vision of Whole Brain Teaching that we separate all WBT resources from TpT.  This is to uphold the values that all WBT resources are FREE and that the only profit gained from Whole Brain Teaching is the success of our students!  I fully support WBT and anything Coach B decides.

However, this left me with a slight problem!  People were finding my resources on Pinterest and since the products are no longer in my store, they could not get to them!  I do make these things for my own classroom but I also want to share WBT with the world and want them to be available for everyone!

So, I have moved all of my resources to a Google Drive that you can easily find at

I am posting all of the currently available resources here so that I can RE-pin them!  (Since Google Drive won't let me pin from there!)  Another teacher is also posting her WBT resources there!  Her blog is coming soon so I will post here as soon as it is up and running!

This folder is PUBLIC.  You may have to sign in to Google before you can see it.  Also, some people stated that they could not access it from their phones but they could get to it from a computer or laptop.  If you have any trouble accessing the folder, please email me at heidimartin@wholebrainteaching.com!

Here is what is currently available on the drive as of August 21st, 2015!  You can click on any of the pics to take you to the drive or use the link above!

If you have any questions on how to use any of these resources:
1. Check my blog TAGS!  I posted about everything here before I put it up on TpT!
2. If you cannot find the information you need, leave me a comment or email me!

I would still love for you to check out my TpT Store and follow me!  I create a lot of other resources that are NOT Whole Brain Teaching resources but go along with some of the things we do in a Whole Brain Teaching classroom!  Most of my resources are K-2!

Thank you and I hope you find these FREE resources useful!

Monday Made It ~ August 17th, 2015

Hello and Good Monday morning!  Have you gone back to school yet?  I have not even been able to get into my classroom!  I am starting to stress out a little bit & all of my school projects are taking over my house!  I should be able to get and start setting things up this Wednesday so stay tuned on PERISCOPE (@WBT_Heidi Martin) for a classroom reveal!

So, I scoped the other day when my friend and I were working on these and got a lot of questions!  This is an up-cycle project because last year when I made these (and was oh so proud), guess what?  They did NOT hold up!  The kids fell right through them!  While, it was funny, they just were not durable & ended up a mess throughout the year!

So, we took a trip to Home Depot, found some wood for $8 (that is the total amount we spend on the wood to make 9 crates!), and got to work!

Other Materials Needed:
~ Staple Gun
~ Fabric
~ Egg Carton/Mattress Foam
~ Drill

The very first thing we did is put the foam on one side of the wood and then staple on the fabric!  This looks nice and neat but the problem is that without an inner piece of wood, the crates just do not hold up!

We had the Home Depot guy measure the outside of the crate AND the inside!  So we got 2 pieces of wood for each crate! (And still only spent $8!)

When you are done stapling the fabric to the outside, you  are ready to screw in the inside piece!  I managed to get one of these done before I ran out of screws so this is still a work in progress!

So now you have an inner piece and an outer piece!

And the final product looks amazing!

This year, since these are so durable, I plan to use these at my Guided Reading table and keep student supplies inside!

So, I was listening to a talk show the other day and they were saying how women should say one thing they like about their bodies everyday to help boost self-image and self-esteem (since yall know we are our worst critics!).  So, I thought, we should do this in the classroom too!

I decided to make something that I could use in my classroom with my students everyday this year!  I will post more pictures when I put it up in my classroom but I wanted to share the activity!

So I wanted to make something easy that the kids could fill out each day.  I am thinking about making a "Sunshine Box" and putting one of these prompts out each day.  During morning work, the students can take a slip, fill it out, and share it.

Sharing could be done however you want!  I am going to post a sign outside of my classroom that says POSITIVE PEOPLE.  I am going to hang a ribbon from the sign.  Each student will have a mini clothespin with their name on it.  When they are done writing, they will take their slip and pin it on their pin for the whole school to see!

I will take a picture of this as soon as we start doing it!

Other ways of sharing could be at morning meetings, with a neighbor, in a group, on school announcements, etc!  The possibilities are endless!

I also wanted to create bigger writing sheets for later in the year when we are working on our paragraphs!  I have included color copies (laminate & reuse) and black and white (positive people journal?).  Currently there are 10 prompts but this activity is a GROWING one!  So, even if you purchase now, you will receive the updates for FREE!

Have you been on BLAB yet?  If not, what are you waiting for?!  Periscope is so much fun and so is Blab!  It is a way for up to 4 people to chat at once and if you are camera shy, you can watch and comment from the sidelines!  There are some AMAZING teacher chats going on every day!

Just go to blab.im and sign in with your Twitter account!  It's that easy!

See what shows are live and subscribe to upcoming blabs!

I am putting this on my Monday Made It because I am just starting a teacher talk show on Monday nights called #teacherprobs!

The idea for this show came up when I was periscoping about how I taught my 1st Graders multiplication!  Before I got started, we somehow got into a discussion about the politics and hardships we sometimes face as teachers!  So, I thought, wouldn't it be great to have a regular place to talk about, vent, and share what we are going through?  Sometimes, there are just things we deal with or things that happen that only fellow teachers will understand!

So, whatever you are dealing with, join the show live in a seat or chat from the sidelines!  Let's support each other because #2getherwearebetter!

My last made it for this week (next week I will have a TON!) is my Add the Room activities!

So far, I have September through December in my TpT Store!  Hoping to have the whole year bundle up very soon!

Each month focuses on a different Common Core Standard in Operations & Algebraic Thinking related to addition!

September focuses on adding to 10 using pictures/objects (CCSS 1.OA.C.6).

Each pack includes a student answer sheet, teacher answer key, and cards to post around the room.  The CCSS is listed on each answer sheet!

Visit my store to see the available ADD THE ROOM sets!

OCTOBER = CCSS 1.OA.C.5 ~ Counting on to Add

NOVEMBER = CCSS 1.OA.B.3 ~ Fact Families

DECEMBER = CCSS 1.OA.A.2 ~ Adding 3 Whole Numbers

Thanks for joining me this Monday and as soon as I can get back into my classroom, I will have so much more to share!

Happy Monday!
